Beujolais

Beujolais

Beujolais

As the weather gets warmer and the days longer many people are searching for lighter, fresher styles of red wine. The Beaujolais region is a historic wine producing region in France located to the south of Burgundy. It is famous for producing light fresh easy drinking wines made from the gamay grape. Its lighter approachable character can sometimes lead people to believe that beaujolais is not serious wine, however there are a number of producers within the region that make some outstanding wines that in many cases rival those of Burgundy.

Morgon is a name synonymous with quality Beaujolais. One of the 10 crus in Beaujolais, Morgon is located on the Beaujolais hills on the western side of the Soane river. What makes Morgon unique is its iron rich soil which contributes to the wine's earthy depth. Morgons wines are known for being dark, fragrant and somewhat powerful for a gamay. On the palate they have notes of cherry and bramble fruits with well structured tannin.

Fleurie is a name familiar to many of us in Ireland. Frequently referred to as the queen of Beujolais, Fleurie is located on south and southeast facing slopes overlooking the Soane river valley. Fleurie is known for its light, silky and supple flavours and characteristic florality and bright aromas of blueberries and red fruit.
