Orange and skin contact wines

The past number of years has seen the rise of the natural wine trend and with it an increase in the popularity of orange wine, but what exactly is orange wine? For most people in Ireland orange wine is a relatively new concept however orange wine is in fact one of the oldest styles of wine. The term “orange wine” was coined in 2004 but the style has been produced in the area that is now modern day Georgia for the past 6,000 years! Despite its name orange wine is not made using oranges but rather gets its name from the rusty golden colour. The wine can be made in a number of different ways but the main component that makes it in an orange wine is skin contact. The juice from the grapes is allowed to ferment along with their skins which imparts a weightier texture to the wine and adds a tannin making orange wines perfect for food. Georgian orange wines are often fermented in an amphora which is a large concrete egg which adds small amounts of oxygen in giving the wine unique flavours and freshness.
