Pet Nat: A Natural Sparkle

Pet Nat: A Natural Sparkle

Pet Nat: A Natural Sparkle

Pet Nat is a word that has become trendy in the wine world in the past number of years, but what exactly does pet nat mean? The word comes from the French word Pétillant Naturel meaning naturally sparkling. Unlike other sparkling wines such as champagne where sugar and yeast are added to the base wine to create a sparkle pet nat is a much simpler production process where a partially fermented wine is added to the bottle and a second fermentation follows in the bottle resulting in a sparkling wine. The pet nat method or methode ancestral as it is also known originated in the french town of Limoux in the 16th century.

The hallmarks of a pet nat are a light frothy effervescence with a light, fresh and fruity palate. Due to their limited use of sulphites most pet nats are made to drink young and should be consumed within a year or two of production. Pet nat also tends to be at an affordable price point in comparison to other sparkling wines with prices ranging from the early to mid 20s. Here in Baggot Street Wines we have a number of pet nats in store and are consistently adding to our range.
