  • Chateau Lynch Bages, Pauillac 2003
    Bordeaux, France
Cabernet Sauvignon 83%, Merlot 11%, Cabernet Franc 6%

Ch. Lynch Bages, a Cinquième Cru Classé, is one of the best-known Médoc estates and has always had a particularly strong following on this side of the English Channel. The wine can be surprisingly soft and approachable when young; however, when fully mature, it develops a succulent richness and a heavenly bouquet of minty blackcurrants and cigar boxes. As Oz Clarke says, “Lynch Bages is impressive at five years, beautiful at 10 years and irresistible at 20.”

The 2003 Lynch Bages has re-emphasised just how good the Left Bank wines are. Huge wafts of muscular, minty, cassis-laden Cabernet Sauvignon on the nose introduce a powerful structured palate with savoury hints of liquorice. It displays even more elegance than other vintages and looks likely to prove absolutely stunning with a bit of patience. Cellar Potential 2012-2030

  • Chateau Larose Perganson, Haut-Medoc
    Bordeaux, France
    58% Cabernet Sauvignon , 40% Merlot, 2% Petit Verdot
Château Larose Perganson lies in Saint-Laurent-Médoc, on the border of Pauillac and Saint-Julien, next to the vineyards of Château Latour. Winemaker Franck Bijon produces a Cru Bourgeois that rivals many Classed Growths. The wine is a blend of 66% Cabernet Sauvignon, 29% Merlot and 5% Petit Verdot. A cold soak prior to the start of fermentation ensures the extraction of good colour, while a long maceration (the length varies according to the vintage) results in supple tannins. The wine is aged in French oak barriques, about 30 – 50% of which are new, for 14 months prior to bottling. It has lovely intensity and balance and, though ready to drink now, will easily go on for another five years. This wine is intense ruby in colour with crimson hues. The nose shows hints of black berries with spicier notes coming to the fore. On the palate, the wine is full bodied with polished elegant tannins, great structure and a very long finish.

  • 2013 Chateau Calon-Segur, Saint-Estephe
    Bordeaux, France
92% Cabernet Sauvignon, 6% Merlot and 2% Petit Verdot
A wonderful expression of Cabernet Sauvignon (92%), cassis, slightly smoky, all elegance from St-Estèphe, a finely polished wine. "This is an impressive wine that transcends the problems of the vintage. It has rich fruit that is sustained by the tannic structure that rests on a bed of fresh blackberry fruits cut with fresh acidity. The wine will certainly age well. Don't think about drinking it before 2024." - ROGER VOSS "The 2013 Calon Segur is a Saint Estephe that should not be ignored. It has developed an attractive bouquet with blackberry, graphite, and a hint of vanilla in the background. No, it is not an intense bouquet, yet winemaker Vincent Millet has conjured aromatics that frankly shade many other Left Bank properties this year. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin and crisp acidity. There is tangible energy here with a cohesive and silky-textured finish. What is lacks in-depth it compensates with a sense of panache. It will be earlier drinking than other vintages, but the class comes through. Bravo to Vincent and his team for making the best wine they possibly could in this challenging vintage. Drink Date: 2018-2032" - Wine Advocate
