  • Blankbottle Master of None
    Western Cape, South Africa
Grenache, Cinsault, Pinot Noir, Syrah and Roussanne.
This mash-up of Grenache, Syrah, Cinsault, Pinot and Roussanne sounds like it shouldn't work but it is a revelation. Pinot-esque in terms of weight, it is amazingly fresh and packed with fruit, but with an immensely satisfying savouriness on the finish.

  • Domaine des Sables Verts Saumur Blanc Loire
    Loire, France
    100% Chenin Blanc
Caroline Meurée & Hervé Malinge are a young winemaking couple who met while studying in Bordeaux. Despite neither of them being from the Loire Valley, in 2019 they bought Domaine des Sables Verts in the heart of Saumur Champigny and embarked on their first vintage. The domaine comprises 16 hectares of vines across 5 communes (Varrains, Chacé, Saumur, Souzay-Champigny et Parnay) which they intend to work organically in order to maintain the soil diversity. Fifteen hectares are planted with Cabernet Franc and just one with Chenin Blanc. The vines lie on deep clay-limestone soils that are rich in tuffeau and green sand, or ‘sables verts’, which inspired the name of the domaine.

  • A.A. Badenhorst Secateurs Red Blend, Swartland
    Western Cape, South Africa
    Cinsault (82%), Shiraz (10%), Grenache (8%)
Secateurs – shape our bush vines during the winter pruning and are used to pick the ripe grapes in summer. Our family has, for the last three generations, nurtured our vines so that they can produce fruit of integrity. The aromas are perfumed, peppery, spicey, smokey, and exhibit ripe red fruit notes. As always the palate texture of this style of wine is supple, smooth on the entry but with enough grip and freshness to finish dry and refreshing. In the mouth, the texture and fineness of fruit tannin and drinkability of the wine is immediately evident. The grapes used are from our farm and from our neighbour’s excellent fruit. Most vines are mountain sloped bush vines. We maintain that high-quality fruit comes from old un-irrigated bush vines grown on a variety of granite soils that are naturally low-yielding.

  • Jordan Black Magic Merlot, Stellenbosch
    Stellenbosch, South Africa
    100% Merlot
Unique by Nature’s Design, the Jordan slopes face North, South, East, and West, with vineyards lying at differing altitudes from 160 to 410 m above sea level. The vineyards with their close proximity to both the Indian and Atlantic Oceans benefit from coastal fog and cool breezes. The Jordan philosophy combines the vineyards’ natural assets with innovative management, creating a profound expression of terroir. The name Merlot is thought to be a diminutive of merle, the French name for the blackbird. At Jordan Wine Estate, our Merlot vineyards are based on Black Tourmaline-rich granite which darkens the soil, leading to perfumed, inky wines. Leafy notes prevail, masking sumptuous black fruit core. Unknit, with wild oak spiciness, yet still showing promise, intensity & smooth tannins.

  • Avondale Jontys Ducks Pekin White, Paarl
    South Africa
Chenin Blanc driven with balance made up of Roussanne, Viognier & Semillon
Jonty’s Ducks wines are slowly made with natural yeast, free of all artificial additives, certified organic, low in sulfur, and absolutely delicious! Owner Johnathan Grieve employs a “posse” of ducks, which patrol the vineyard looking for and destroying snails, which eat the vines. The ducks are an eco-friendly way to avoid using harmful chemical poisons to kill pests and act as the guardians of the vines on Avondale. I taste pure fruit of lime, grapefruit, pineapple, quince, with just a dash of honey on the nose. The palate is dense with ripe flavors and juicy with tangy peach and brie flavors, delivered with good intensity and freshness. These mouthwatering flavors linger on the palate.

  • Fairview Sauvignon Blanc, Western Cape
    South Africa
    100% Sauvignon Blanc
Fairview has a reputation for consistent quality across a range of innovative styles, using both classic and unusual varieties, and leads the field in South Africa in matching varieties to specific sites. The Fairview estate now has a total of 680 hectares of vineyard over four appellations: Paarl (350 hectares), Swartland (155 hectares), Darling (140 hectares), and Stellenbosch (35 hectares). The grapes are sourced from unirrigated vineyards in Darling. The vines are trellised and planted on deep red oakleaf soils. The grapes were machine harvested from very early in the morning, arriving at the cellar before sunrise. Whole berries were put into the press, after which the juice settled for 48 hours and was fermented in stainless-steel tanks. The wine was left on its fine lees after fermentation, prior to blending and bottling. Sheltered from the moderating maritime influence, this Sauvignon Blanc has tropical aromas, green figs, nettle, and guava. Fresh grapefruit flavors give way to lime undertones.

  • Fairview Darling Chenin Blanc, Coastal Region
    South Africa
    100% Chenin Blanc
The grapes for this wine are from a bush vine vineyard on the west-facing hills outside Darling, at approximately 300 metres above sea level. The vineyard was planted in 2001 on Richter 99 rootstock, which is tolerant to water stress and is dry farmed. The soil in this vineyard is decomposed granite, differentiating it from the surrounding vineyards which are mainly oakleaf soil; and adding a mineral note to the wines. Vibrant lemon yellow in colour with fruity aromas of pineapple and hints of citrus on the nose. The palate is fresh and crisp with lively, well-balanced acidity and flavours of lime and minerality typical of the Darling vineyards.

  • Blank Bottle Rabbitsfoot, Stellenbosch
    Stellenbosch, South Africa
    100%Sauvignon Blanc
The story by Pieter Walser: This block of grapes grows very high on the Helderberg Mountain in Stellenbosch. The owner of the vineyard makes a sweet wine from it. The technique he uses is to pinch the stems of the bunches whilst it is still on the vine. He then leaves the grapes on the vine to dry. Unfortunately, what’s been happening is that the baboons from the mountain come down and feast on the top part of the vineyard. He, therefore, needed a buffer between his precious sweet stuff and the mountain baboons and decided to give me the top part of this awesome vineyard (on the flat top section). This fools the baboons into thinking that there are no grapes left on the bottom slope. His plan works like a bomb! (and I’m not complaining at all!) I can’t get much so this is a limited production of about 835 bottles. The label is a combination of Linocuts, and hand-drawings showing an a-symmetrical shape that is very close to my heart. Sort of similar to the a-symmetrical wine in the bottle. It tastes the complete opposite of what one might expect. "I personally don’t like Sauvignon blanc all that much, but this does not taste like traditional Sauvignon blanc at all. It is ripe, barrel-fermented and aged. An awesome, very different expression of South African Sauvignon.” - Pieter Walser Revamped Sauvignon Blanc at it's absolute best. It reminds me of a bit of Semillon on the nose, but it’s quite plump on the palate, although nicely taut. It’s aromatic, slightly grassy. Softer and more texture on the palate than Semillon. A bit of quince on the aroma, and paw paw, almost mango on the palate, and even white peach.

  • Blank Bottle Air Carrots of Pagnol, Paarl
    Palmela, South Africa
    Grenache Blanc, Grenache Gris
A blend of Grenache Blanc from Paarl/Swartland and Wellington, with a dash of Grenache Gris. This wine was taken to the tank and fermented in old French Oak barrels. But then, to add some extra kick in the wine, they also allowed a few days of skin contact on a portion of the grapes. This gives the wine extra grip and texture.

  • Mooiplaas The Coco Chocolate Merlot
    Stellenbosch, South Africa
    merlot
Mooiplaas The Coco Chocolate Merlot is an inky purple in colour. On the big nose showing aromas of cherry fruit, mocha and dark chocolate. The palate is silky smooth with massive mouth-filling flavours of oak, coffee, chocolate. The long and persistent finish with vanilla and gentle spice notes and well integrated silky tannins. A surprisingly complex, mature and elegant wine is not a heavyweight but impresses with its dark berry fruit and its cocoa flavour. It deserves its name 'The Coco'. Notice: No cocoa beans were used during the wine making process! The idea was to create a wine with seductive dark fruit, cocoa and chocolate flavours and well integrated oak on the palate. To achieve this heavily toasted French oak were used.
