On the nose, it’s immediately expressive: ripe red cherry, raspberry and plum, layered with classic Rioja notes of vanilla, coconut, sweet spice and a gentle hint of leather. There’s also a savoury edge - dried herbs and a touch of tobacco - that adds depth and complexity without ever straying into seriousness.

The palate is smooth, balanced and beautifully poised. Red fruit remains at the core, wrapped in silky tannins and lifted by fresh acidity that keeps everything lively and moreish. The oak is present but perfectly judged, giving warmth and spice rather than weight, and the finish is long, elegant and quietly confident.

Founded in 1890, La Rioja Alta is a very traditional Rioja that is currently at the top of its game. La Rioja Alta is one of the key wineries in the region, based in Haro, the heart of Rioja. A major vineyard owner with 360 hectares of vines, it is almost self sufficient for grapes which is unusual for the area.
