Tourelles de Longueville 2016 Pauillac

Tourelles de Longueville 2016 Pauillac

Deliciously ripe and balanced with attractive, earthy nuances, surrounding ripe-plum and red-berry aromas and flavors. Sheet-like tannins layer up neatly and build a long, esteemed finish. Second wine of Pichon Baron. Try from 2023.

Focus on Fine Wine - Peter
"Our focus on fine wine is back and we will feature a fine wine every couple of weeks chosen and reviewed by one of the BSW Team and tasted by all.
This week’s fine wine is Les Tourelles de Longueville 2016 from Pauillac in Bordeaux, the second wine from the famous 2nd growth Chateau Pichon Baron.
The Pichon Baron estate has an illustrious history having been established in 1694 by Baron Jacques Pichon de Longueville from a plot of vines close to Latour originally bought by Pierre Dezmesures de Rauzan. These formed part of his daughter’s dowry when she married the Baron. The estate remained in the same family for generations until 1933 before finally being sold to and modernised by AXA Millesimes in 1987.
The name Tourelles de Longueville refers to the 2 turrets which are a distinguishing feature of the imposing Chateau inspired by Renaissance architecture and constructed in 1851.
The 2016 vintage was characterised by widely varying weather conditions, with a wet winter, damp spring and hot, dry summer. By the September harvest, the fruit had reached excellent ripeness levels.
The wine is composed of 58% Merlot, 25% Cabernet Sauvignon, 12% Cabernet Franc and 5% Petit Verdot aged for 12 months in French Oak, 30% of which is new. It has an intense deep ruby colour and reveals notes of fresh red and black fruit along with touches of cream, aniseed, turned earth and cigar-box giving the unmistakable character of fine Pauillac.
A wonderful introduction to the fine wines of Bordeaux."

The 2016 Les Tourelles de Longueville is a very beautiful wine. Pliant, supple and inviting, the 2016 has so much to recommend it. Dark red cherry, red plum, tobacco, menthol and licorice are all laced together in this creamy, wonderfully expressive, silky Pauillac. The Tourelles will be impossible to resist young, and should drink well for another 10-15 years, maybe more.

The density and beauty to this second wine are superb with a rich palate and round and velvety tannins. Lots of blackberries and blackcurrants. Wow.

Peter's Recommendation

One of the staff current faves. We all tasted this on a recent staff night out and we absolutely loved it.
