Portuguese whites

Over the past number of years we have seen a boom in Portuguese wines. The combination of varied styles along with very reasonable price points has led Portuguese wines to become a favourite among savvy consumers seeking to gain maximum value for money. Portuguese reds are the most popular with a wide range of styles from rich intense full bodied Touriga Nacional blends  from Alentejo to lighter more refined styles from Bairrada which use the Baga grape which is similar to the world renowned nebbiolo of northern Italy.

What is lesser known however are the white wines of Portugal. Vinho Verde is probably the most well known white from portugal. The Vinho Verde wine region is located in the north west of Portugal bordering the Basque region of Spain to the north and Dao from the south. Its relatively cool climate gives the wine its aromatic quality and its trademark zippy acidity. The quality of vinho verde has increased massively in the past decades taking the wine from a simple spritzy drink to a wine with serious complexity and long mineral notes. The increase in quality has thankfully not been followed by a huge increase in price and can be found here in Baggot Street Wines from just €17.95 for the Aveleda Loureiro blend.

As good as it is there is much more to Portuguese white wine than just Vinho verde. Those who are a fan of burgundian whites should take a look at what the Douro and Alentejo has to offer. The whites from this region are oaked and similar in style to those of the Cote D’or. Examples include the Esporao Reserva Branco, Casa Ferreirinha Vinha Grande Douro and the Niepoort Redoma Branco. If you are a fan of a fresher more mineral style take a look at the Xisto Ilmitado from Luis Sebra which is reminiscent of a Chablis thanks to its mineral rich terroir.

If you are looking to celebrate something special or just to treat yourself we also stock sparkling wine from Portugal, 3B is a sparkling wine from award winning female winemaker Filipa Pato and comes in both rose and blanc de blanc styles, it's also quite reasonably priced at €27.95 and makes a good champagne alternitave. So no matter what style of white you are looking for, Portugal has you more than covered and all for a price that won't break the bank.
