"‘Real wine’ is a term embracing wines that are made organically, biodynamically and naturally. By no means precise nor prescriptive it serves chiefly to highlight growers who work with minimal mediation, ideally to obtain the purest articulation of terroir, fruit and vintage. All great wine begins in the vineyard and is ultimately the result of sensitive farming. It is important that growers farm sustainably and with a sense of environmental responsibility, ensuring the natural balance and health of the vineyard." The Real Wine Fair

  • Yves Cuilleron Les Pierres Seches Saint-Joseph 2016
    Côtes du Rhône, France
    Syrah
"Saint-Joseph Pierres Sèches comes from different Syrah vineyards grown on shallow, sandy, granitic soils on the hillsides of Chavanay. “Les Pierres Sèches” refers to the dry stone walls used to strengthen the vine terracing. Again, the grapes are hand-picked; they are then sorted, crushed and partially destemmed in the cellar. Fermented, using native yeasts, in open, temperature-controlled vats for about 3 weeks, with regular cap-punching and pumping-over. Malolactic-fermented in barriques, the wine will spent 18 months in barrels before bottling. Deep ruby red colour. Vibrant strawberry and mineral scents are deepened by singed earth and tobacco, with a floral quality adding energy. Sharply focused red berry flavours are pleasingly bitter and precise. Turns spicier on the long, clinging finish. This conveys very good energy." Le Caveau.

  • Matassa Coume de l'Olla Blanc
    Staff Favourite
    South-West France, France
    Grenache Gris, Maccabeu, Muscat
Beautiful aromatic nose with pear, apple and a hint of honeycomb. Shows great freshness on the palate together with its unmistakable minerality. Complex, with ripe fruit. A skin contact white you won't forget. "Although still relatively young, Domaine Matassa is already well-established with listings in some of the best restaurants in the world. Winemaker Tom Lubbe espouses a natural approach and has mostly done away with the use of sulphur. Indigenous yeasts give the whites a somewhat funky character but this is tempered by great freshness and texture. Thanks to schist and slate soils, a mineral note runs through the wines." La Rousse.
