  • Combel la Serre, Pur Fruit Cahors
The Ilberts have been growing vines in Cahors since 1901, bottling their own wines since 2005, and current vigneron Julien today farms 26 hectares on la cause, an old Occitan word for the regions limestone soils. He shuns the vogue of adding Bordeaux grapes to his Malbec, while still taking a modern approach by using Burgundy bottles and innovative, classy labels. Farming organically since 2013, Julien doesnt overwork the wines one bit, his philosophy being to make wines for drinking. It sees no oak, being vinified and aged in cement tanks only. • RENE BARBIER, ESPECTACLE, MONTSANT
A joint venture between Rene Barbier and the Clos Mogador team. The project is jointly owned by Rn and Isabelle Barbier, Fernando and Marta Zamora (Oenologists and teachers at University of Taragona), and Charlotte and Christopher Cannan. Biodynamic. "Espectacle is a tiny production of old vines Garnacha made by Rene Barbier, Sr. The 100 year old Garnacha vines come from a dramatic and steep vineyard. Rene refers to this vineyard as the "L'Ermita of Monsant." This outstanding new wine comes from a single, very steep vineyard planted with over 100 year old Grenache vines. The vineyard is located at La Figuera, on the northern edge of the Montsant D.O., and looks onto the famous Montsant mountain as well as having spectacular views of the Ebro valley and even the distant Pyrenees 200 kms away. Hence the name!" "The 2015 Espectacle del Montsant is a ripe and classic vintage for this exceptional wine produced from a single vineyard in Montsant. This has a forward personalityopen, expressive and showy in the nosefrom a typically warm and ripe year that resulted in a voluptuous and hedonistic Espectacle that's easy to like. It's rounder and lusher than the 2014 I had next to it, and the two vintages showed very different. The palate is also gentler, with integrated acidity and a soft mouthfeel." Robert Parker, Wine Advocate. "Tobacco, licorice and spice notes weave through flavours of red cherry and mountain herb in this expressive red. The smooth texture glides over well-integrated tannins, while gentle acidity keeps this fresh. Well-knit and harmonious. Garnacha." Wine Spectator. When to Drink: 2018 - 2031

  • Ch. Ormes de Pez 2008
Cab - Sauv Bourdeaux blend. The 2008 Ormes de Pez is one of the few successful wines from St Estphe this vintage. With a lovely, enticing nose, it is full of the dense, dark fruit of the commune but with a creamy, raspberry twist to the finish. The tannins are so ripe they are almost powdery on the palate incredible considering how linear and firm the majority of wines from this commune were and at this price, its an absolute bargain.

  • Ovello Riserva 2014 - Barbaresco
"Always one of my favorite wines from Produttori del Barbaresco, the 2014 Barbaresco Riserva Ovello lays out a broad and soft mouthfeel, with tannins that have already been polished and integrated thanks to ample time in the bottle already. It's safe to say that this Ovello cru loyally demonstrates the level of richness and textural softness that this site is known for. The bouquet is redolent of bright berry fruit with cherry, blackberry and plum. Also, the 2014 vintage was a warm one at the end of the growing season, and you taste a little bit of that ripeness here too". Wine Advocate-Parker
